Astronomy Translation Network
There are plenty of good astronomy resources available in education and public outreach, although most of the time these will only be available in one language, English. A key factor in astronomy outreach is to have resources available in local languages. To address this, the Astronomy Translation Network (ATN) has been created, which consists in a global network concentrating good resources and those needing translation, and matching translation needs with volunteers. The project is being coordinated by the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ) and the IAU Office for Astronomy Outreach (OAO). Its goals are: (i) to make the world’s best open resources accessible without language barriers; (ii) to build a network of active translators to support translation needs; and (iii) to provide high-quality translations through an assessment and review process. As of November 2018, the ATN has officially gone over 300 volunteers! At the top of the charts (see below), with 36 volunteers (myself included), is the busy Portuguese Language Group, coordinated by Catarina Leote.
